Some Plantain fun!

In Ghana, Kelewele is a street food made of fried marinated plantains with groundnuts.

Rachel, a PH.D. Candidate at Yale, left her job at Goldman Sachs to launch Kelewelenyc. As far as she could remember, she always loved plantains, especially when watching her mother fry the plantains in the family’s age old-cast iron black pot. During her college years, Rachel could always rely on plantains for cheap snacks. Also, while transitioning to a healthier and vegetarian lifestyle, plantains became the main ingredient as a healthful vegan food.

Going into African American studies and Socio-cultural anthropology led her to creating her company and she got inspired by these words: Culture, Food, Migration, Community.

On Rachel’s website and IG page, you can see the variety of ice-cream, cookies, brownies, smoothies and burgers she creates all plantains-based. And she insists: “They’re not bananas”.

Unfortunately for New Yorkers, she just closed her Dekalb Shop in Downtown Brooklyn this January 2022 after 7 months of delighting our taste buds. But no worries she’s onto new and bigger adventures for Kelewelenyc. Let’s stay tuned and wish her the best for these new opportunities. And Oh! Get you some cookies from the website, you won’t regret it!
